About

April 2010
Of all the things in my life I could write about why The Laundry?
The project has been brewing in one form or another since I was 15, so now as I'm on the 50 side of my 40s, even the mere suggestion that it may finally happen is very exciting to me.

This concerns more than me though.  My laundry project has impacted the entire family in ways I couldn't foretell and it is for this reason that I am attempting to record the process of converting an outside bathroom and laundry into a jewellery studio/laundry in this blog. This is my first blog so you'll have to excuse any blunders.

I live in rural Victoria, Australia.  I started studying jewellery at High School in the 70s but was unable to secure an apprenticeship.  I had been dabbling ever since until I found myself in London, hating my job in Television but living with a man who just got his "dream job".  On a whim I picked up the phone to a University in London I had been told ran fantastic jewellery courses.  They were in the middle of interviewing for their Silversmithing, Jewellery and Allied Crafts Degree.  I got on the train, had an interview and that was that.
Not only did I get in and complete the Degree, I had 2 children and won a Goldsmith's award for Design in Jewellery along the way.  Not bad for someone who can't draw and never thought she'd have children.

We moved back to Australia in 2002.
My blog "The Laundry" is about the evolution of a bench in my backyard.  This is a project for me but its positive impact on the family dynamics is undeniable and hopefully what I'll be blogging about.
Who knows, eventually I may even post images of my work.  Time will tell but first things first...
